Under $200…total?!?! That, according to my trusty pocket computer, stands at a savings of $246, folks! Huzzah! We RARELY get to offer up Burgundy here on Last Bottle – there’s simply not enough wine, and the prices are usually CRAZY high. But this! THIS!!! We’re entering into the all-time great territory, my friends – some of Burgundy’s top Premier Crus, with each bottling representing a distinct single vineyard within each cru, from Burgundy’s own native son, Romuald Valot!!!

FOUR, yes, four bottles of Burgundian deliciousness – each incredibly distinct, with GREAT scores (93, 93, 93, and one 91 – those are like 96+ for basically any other region, critics have been doing their part to slow the massive inflation of Burgundy prices for years!) – wait…what was I saying? Oh, yes! These ROCK! Romuald was born not far from these parcels, the son of a vigneron, in a long line of a vigneron family, all focused on Burgundy. And yet, growing up – working for the BIG houses of Burgundy, in those famed Grand Cru vineyards – he turned away from wine. He saw behind the curtain…with the chemical spraying in the vines, the overexertion and manipulation of the wines, the tricks of the trade to make a bad vintage seem ok…it was simply too much. So he bought a small cottage in nearby Beaujolais – and began making his own wines, with an old-school “one man and a field” approach that led to the purest expressions of place he could craft. He developed a loyal and sophisticated following – considered among the cutting edge of Beaujolais' new, elite, and transformative winemakers.

“It’s about the wisdom and respect of nature – I am first and foremost a farmer, and my role is to produce in the healthiest way possible and to give the maximum pleasure I can in each bottle. I try to recreate a form of life that is free and wild in the vineyard...it’s the same with the wine, I prefer to have a beautiful parcel classified as a village wine than to vinify a cru wine without soul…”  - Romuald Valot

Preach, Brother Valot, preach! After years of making STUNNING Beaujolais…the PRODIGAL SON has returned to Burgundy!!! He’s carefully selected vineyards with character, and set about showcasing the tippy-top best expressions of each! All ORGANIC farming, minimalistic winemaking, and some truly magic juju thrown in the mix – I promise you, these sure don’t drink like Burgundies UNDER $35 a bottle!!! For Premier Cru? Just silly. We don’t have nearly enough – and I’m basically buying half of them for myself (ok, not really) but seriously – for all that is holy, pure, and right in the wine universe…do what you must to secure these! Quick tasting notes below, plus critic reviews below that...but DO NOT MISS!

Romuald Valot Beaune Les Cent Vignes Premier Cru 2019: cherries, pomegranates, rose petals, pine, with rooibos tea, and tingly cranberry sharpness. Gorgeous.

Romuald Valot Pommard Clos de Verger Premier Cru 2020: smoked hay, black tea, raspberries, and black cherries, big, powerful, and structured, with meaty and savory elements. Old school Burgundy built for the long haul.

Romuald Valot Pernand-Vergelesses Les Fichots Premier Cru 2021: bright and lean, with light red currants, red cherries, cranberries, lavender, and rosemary, very fresh and jubilant. Me like.

Romuald Valot Maranges Les Clos Roussots Premier Cru 2021: sappy and floral – hibiscus and rose, with sweet and tart red currants, cranberries, and plums, followed by orange zest and a drying, chalky sensation on the finish. Fun and surprising!

“Romuald Valot Beaune Les Cent Vignes Premier Cru 2019: Concentrated fresh pomegranate, cherry flesh and cranberry overwhelm the nose. The palate has steely austerity, with curious iodine comingled into blackberry flesh. Lingering, deep, intense minerality and brisk acidity carry its long finish.”

“Romuald Valot Pommard Clos de Verger Premier Cru 2020: Profoundly serious and focused, this wine exudes subtle aromas of red berries, licorice and wild mint. The palate, even with some aeration, is currently displaying a bit austere and hides a deep fruit core buried beneath layers of rocks and earthy umami. An intense and textured expression, it has promise yet to be revealed. Best after 2028.”

“Romauld Valot Maranges Les Clos Roussots Premier Cru 2021: Aromas are high-toned and heady, with an abundance of pomegranate, fresh cherries and black pepper. The palate is consistent with the decadent aromas and are accentuated by brisk acidity. Although the wine is elegant, one may crave greater persistence in fruit. Great to enjoy now.”

“Romauld Valot Maranges Les Clos Roussots Premier Cru 2021: Aromas of fresh cherry skins dusted with fresh thyme contribute to a pleasurable balance and ripeness on the palate. A hint of smoke and stony minerality assists in balancing such ripeness of fruit.”

Romuald Valot was born into a family of Burgundian vignerons and spent years working for classic producers in Burgundy before developing his own wine realm in the remote hills of Beaujolais.

About The Producer

In 2013, Romuald purchased his quaint cottage, cuverie, and 3 hectares of vines in western Beaujolais, in the hills above Beaujeu. His vines are up to 100 years old and are planted atop granite 500 meters above sea level, making them some of the highest in the region, and completely isolated. Since then, he’s acquired an additional 8 hectares of vineyards throughout the region, as well as 1 hectare in the Côte de Beaune’s Ladoix, from which he produces his impeccable pinot noir. Romuald only treats the vines with his own concoctions made of wild plants, which he personally gathers and mixes with spring water, whey, and clay. His extreme organic agriculture approach, paired with his simple winemaking philosophy, yields vibrant, revolutionary wines that stand out from a great many in the Beaujolais region.
